If you don’t know much about decluttering, we are sharing some simple tips and hacks to help you get started. Once you have finished this guide, you already know how to clean up any space in your home!

Prepare a Decluttering Checklist

Planning makes everything go better. It’s a lot easier to declutter when you know what you need to clean and organize. Having a goal in mind will help you sort through your clutter.

You can either create your own sorting system or print out decluttering checklists that are available online. This will help you get started and quickly build up the momentum until all the mess has disappeared.

Categorize Your Clutter

To make your decluttering project go as smoothly as possible, create a system for sorting all the items. First, you need large storage containers or boxes. Sort the items into different categories like the following:

Trash

Designate one box for things that should go straight to the trash bin. Gather all the things and junk that are no longer useful. If you find anything that cannot be recycled, put them in this box and hire a company for junk removal services. They can lend you the help you need in hauling away all of that unwanted and unnecessary junk you have sorted out.

Recyclables

All old and unused items should be placed inside this container. Items for the rubbish bin that can be recycled. From toilet paper tubes to plastic bottles, you will be shocked by how many recyclables you have at home.

We can sort out recyclable materials like plastic bags, newspapers, milk cartons, old clothing, and clear plastic lids and turn them into useful things. Once placed in a separate box, recyclables are bought and sent to different Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

Needs Fixing and Repairing

There are a lot of materials that can be replaced instead of thrown away. Items that you may place in this box are an old pair of shoes, clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Moreover, old furniture and appliances that are still in decent condition may be fixed and refreshed, not discarded. When these are already functional, you can use them or sell them to consignment stores and thrift shops.

Donations

Lastly, give all the household items that you no longer need to someone else in your community. Designate one bin for items that can be donated to charity. Old tops, jeans, outwear, hats, and sleepwear are some of the things accepted as charitable contributions. Most charities also accept shoes, bags, linens, and books.

Keep Flat Surfaces Clutter-Free

Counters, nightstands, and coffee tables are some of the surfaces with a lot of clutter. When things keep on piling, you might end up feeling frustrated and stressed out. Add a storage space close to flat surfaces so that magazines and other items have their own place. Moreover, try to limit each surface to less than five things on top. Having fewer things on flat surfaces will make everything less messy.

Utilize Your Kitchen Storage Spaces

Kitchens are usually prone to being messy and disorganized. Fortunately, you can keep your kitchen space clutter-free by organizing your storage areas. Use pull-out cabinets and organize everything by item types like cutting boards, spices, utensils, and appliances.

Having a sort-out system will prevent you from tossing everything loosely. Throw away old stocks, donate any excess kitchenware, clean out your fridge, and don’t forget to add labels for easy identification. With this, you can get rid of clutter and put everything back where it belongs.

Add Storage Under the Stairs

Depending on the size of your stairs, you can utilize the space for extra storage. Instead of letting it be neglected and wasted, why not use it for other purposes? Install drawers and shelving units for things that you want to be within reach. You may also place storage furniture like ottomans under the stairs. All you have to do is get creative and convert the angled area into useful storage space!

Organize Your Bathroom

Your bathroom is filled with toiletries, towels, and other products. One quick tip for organizing your bathroom space is removing items that you haven’t used in a while. You should also avoid placing toiletries on top of your countertop to maintain a clutter-free bathroom.

Sort out your medicine cabinet and discard expired medications. For the cabinet drawers, you should pull everything out and throw any rubbish and trash that you find.

Declutter Your Closet

This is probably one of the messiest areas in your home. Similar to the kitchen, sort out all your clothing by item types such as tops, bottoms, dresses, boots, and sweaters. Decide what you will keep and donate to charity. Avoid hanging all your clothes. Instead, use closet organizers to maximize storage.
